Series: Changes in your skin as you age: The 30s
Your skin undergoes several natural changes as you age, including a decrease in collagen and elastin that leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Though you can’t reverse age-related skin changes, you can slow the aging process by taking good care of your skin. In your 30s, you’ll begin to see the results of your skincare efforts (or lack thereof) in your 20s.
Skin in Your 30s:
Skin cell turnover slows. In your 30s, your skin produces new skin cells and sheds dead skin cells more slowly. Studies show that the epidermal turnover rate slows from 30 to 50 percent between our 30s and 80s. In young adults, the stratum corneum transit time (aka skin cell turnover time) was as quick as 20 days, whereas in older adults it stretches to 30 days or more. This slower skin turnover makes your skin look duller.
Collagen and elastin decrease and become weaker. These changes lead to sagging skin and wrinkles that begin in the form of expression lines. You’ll probably first start noticing fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes and mouth.
Challenges to healthy skin:
Pregnancy. Healthy levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy may give your skin a healthy glow. However, your skin may become drier and tougher during pregnancy because the growing baby consumes so many nutrients. You may wind up with stretch marks in pink, red or purple streaks that form on the abdomen and other body parts and eventually fade to white or gray. Stretch marks are common in pregnant women, particularly during the latter half of pregnancy.
Hyperpigmentation. Melasma—brown patches that often occur on the forehead, cheeks and chin—may appear in your 30s. Sun exposure triggers melasma, so sun protection is one of the most common treatments. Hormones may also trigger melasma. It’s so common during pregnancy that it’s sometimes called the pregnancy mask. Women taking birth control pills may also experience melasma.
Wear sunscreen. Continue wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, such as SkinFuse Shield Zinc Oxide 21%, every day, even on cloudy days and when you’re inside. Sunscreen and moisturizer are the most effective anti-aging products.
Moisturize. Thirty-something skin may need more help to stay hydrated, so use a moisturizer, such as SkinFuse Reclaim Hydrating Support, that doesn’t contain irritating ingredients.

Eat a healthy diet. Nourish your skin from the inside out. Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and moderate amounts of whole grains, lean proteins and healthy (unsaturated) fats. Limit your intake of sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Consuming too much sugar over time leads to glycation, a process that ages skin prematurely.
